BBQ & Karahi in Chakwal — Two Years of Eating My Way Through Every Spot

Last updated: 2026  |  All restaurants visited personally  |  Prices verified

I am Muhammad Zeeshan from Chakwal. If someone asks me what I love most about this city, honestly, the answer is the BBQ. Not the fancy stuff. Not the restaurant chains you see in Islamabad. I mean the real thing — a coal grill in an open courtyard, smoke in your face, naan straight from the tandoor, karahi bubbling in front of you. That kind of BBQ. That is what Chakwal does best.

For the past two years I have eaten BBQ almost every Friday. Sometimes with my family, sometimes with friends, sometimes alone when I just needed a proper plate of kabab karahi after a long week. I have eaten at small dhabas that had no name on the door. I have eaten at proper restaurants with menus and waiters. I have eaten tikka on the side of the road in Talagang. I have tried nearly everything.

"The first time I had the kabab karahi at Sheraz Tikka, I sat there for a minute before I even started eating. The smell of the charcoal, the steam rising from the karahi, the soft naan still warm from the tandoor — this is the kind of food that reminds you why you live where you live."

What Makes Chakwal's BBQ Different

Chakwal is not Lahore or Karachi. We do not have a hundred restaurants to choose from. But what we have, we have done properly. The BBQ culture here is old. People here know what real charcoal flavor tastes like. They will tell you immediately if something was cooked on gas instead of coal. The restaurants that try to cut corners do not last long in this city because locals figure it out fast and stop going.

The best BBQ spots in Chakwal are mostly small. Not fancy. Plastic chairs, steel tables, outdoor seating. But the food is better than anything you will find at a decorated restaurant that uses frozen meat and gas grills. I will take a plastic chair at Sheraz Tikka over a cushioned seat somewhere that does not care about the food.

The Truth About Chakwal's Karahi

Chakwal's karahi scene has its own character. The karahi here tends to be spicier and more tomato-forward than what you get in Rawalpindi or Islamabad. Less cream, more heat. The meat is usually cooked longer — properly tender, not just browned on the outside. And the portion sizes are honest. You get what you pay for, usually more.

The kabab karahi is the specialty of this area. Soft seekh kebabs cooked inside a karahi with a thick, smoky gravy. It sounds simple. It is not. Getting that balance right — kebab soft enough to fall apart with a piece of naan, gravy spicy enough without being bitter — takes real skill. Sheraz Tikka has been doing it for years. A few others have come close. Most have not.

đŸ”Ĩ How I judge a BBQ restaurant — my personal checklist:

  • ✓ Real coal, not gas — I always check the grill before I order. Coal gives a smoky depth that gas simply cannot replicate. If I see a gas burner, I leave.
  • ✓ Fresh meat, not frozen — You can taste the difference. Fresh meat has a texture that frozen meat loses no matter how well you cook it. I always ask locals if a place uses fresh supply.
  • ✓ Proper marination — Yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, real spices. Not just red food color and salt. I have seen places that are very red but have almost no actual flavor.
  • ✓ Naan from a tandoor, not a tawa — There is a difference. Tandoor naan is fluffy and has a slight char. Tawa naan is flat and often dry. Good BBQ needs good naan.
  • ✓ Honest portion sizes — I weigh nothing, but I can tell when a karahi has been stretched. Watery gravy and small pieces of meat are red flags.
  • ✓ Price that matches the quality — I have eaten Rs. 400 BBQ that was better than Rs. 1800 BBQ. Price does not always equal quality in Chakwal. I tell you which places are worth it.

BBQ Spots for Different Budgets

Not everyone has the same budget. I review restaurants for everyone — students, families, office groups, travellers passing through on the motorway. On this page you will find spots that range from very affordable to properly premium.

For budget eating, the small tikka shops near Saddar Ahata and on the road toward Talagang give you real charcoal BBQ for under Rs. 500 per person. For mid-range, Sheraz Tikka and City Restaurant BBQ Talagang are excellent — Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500 per person for a proper meal. For something more upscale — a proper sit-down dinner with ambiance — Royal Orchard has BBQ options in their menu that are well done, though you will pay more for the setting.

My honest top pick for BBQ in Chakwal: Sheraz Tikka on Saddar Ahata Street. No air conditioning. No fancy decor. But the kabab karahi is the best I have had in Chakwal, and the chicken tikka at Rs. 400 for ten pieces is the best value on any menu in this city. Come before 7 PM. Bring cash. Bring appetite.

What to Order If You Are Going for the First Time

If you are new to a BBQ restaurant in Chakwal, here is what I tell every friend who asks me: start with the kabab karahi and the chicken tikka. These two items will tell you everything about how good that restaurant is. If the kabab karahi has good gravy and the tikka is properly marinated, you can trust the rest of the menu. If either of these disappoints, order carefully.

For mutton lovers, the mutton karahi and mutton raan are the items to judge a place by. Good mutton should fall off the bone without being mushy. The gravy should be rich but not oily. If the mutton is chewy or the gravy is thin and watery, the kitchen is cutting corners somewhere.

Every restaurant page on this site has a bill calculator. Select your dishes and quantities, and it shows your total including service charges. No surprises at the table.

A Note on Payment at BBQ Restaurants

Most BBQ spots in Chakwal are cash only. This includes Sheraz Tikka, most of the spots in Saddar Ahata, and the smaller places on Talagang Road. Some of the bigger restaurants like Royal Orchard and Shahryar accept cards and mobile payments. I mention the payment method clearly on every restaurant page so you are never stuck without cash at the counter.

Take an ATM withdrawal before you go to any of the smaller BBQ spots. There is no ATM on Saddar Ahata Street that I have found. The nearest one is a ten-minute walk away. Learn from my mistake.

Frequently Asked Questions About BBQ in Chakwal

Which restaurant has the best kabab karahi in Chakwal?

Sheraz Tikka on Saddar Ahata Street. It is not even close. The kebabs are soft, the gravy is smoky and thick, and it comes with two large naans. Go once and you will understand why locals keep going back. After that, City Restaurant BBQ in Talagang is a strong second choice.

What is the average cost for BBQ for two people?

At a mid-range spot like Sheraz Tikka, two people eating kabab karahi, chicken tikka, and extra naan will spend around Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 2,500 including service charges. At a budget spot, Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 1,500 is enough. Premium spots like Royal Orchard can cost Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 4,000 for two people.

Which BBQ restaurants accept cards or digital payment?

Royal Orchard and Shahryar Hotel accept cards. Nosh e Khaas in Talagang has started accepting JazzCash. Most other spots — including Sheraz Tikka and City Restaurant BBQ — are cash only. I always note the payment method in each restaurant review.

What is the best time to go for BBQ in Chakwal?

Between 6 PM and 7:30 PM is ideal. The coal is at its best then, the meat is freshest, and the restaurants are busy enough to have fast turnover but not so crowded that service suffers. After 8:30 PM the best cuts are usually gone and service slows down.

Are there BBQ options on the Chakwal motorway route?

Yes. Shahryar Hotel at Balkasar on the M-2 is a solid stop. Dewan e Khaas near Balkasar is another option for travellers. Both serve BBQ and karahi. Shahryar is open late, which makes it useful for people travelling at night.

How often do you update the prices on this site?

Every 15 days. I either visit the restaurant or call them to confirm current prices. If a price is wrong, message me on WhatsApp at +92 313 8096002 and I fix it within 24 hours. Keeping prices accurate is the most important thing on this site.
